My students need flexible, comfortable seating, including a couch, rug, and bean bag chairs, to create an inviting classroom where they can build positive relationships while tackling difficult curriculum.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a teacher in a diverse, low-income school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
58.6% of my students rely on free and reduced lunch, and a large majority of my students have given up on school.
They are children who are saddled with adult responsibilities in their home lives. These factors, along with others, may prevent my students from excelling in their academic careers. From the minute students walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth. I strive to inspire students to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
My classroom environment needs to be inviting, open to collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. Sitting in rows of desks does not promote this comfortable learning environment. The world is changing rapidly and our classroom should be evolving alongside it to prepare our students for the future. I need to change the seating in my room so I can change the mindset of my students.
Many of my 6th graders have already given up on school.
They have determined that they are not, and will never be good students. By creating a comfortable, welcoming environment, I will change that mindset.
According to Ed Gilligan, "a person with a “Growth Mindset' is someone who is willing to face challenges, is okay with making mistakes, and chooses to learn from those mistakes to keep going." We will use the couch and rug to structure our learning environment. Our bean bag chairs will be used as seating within that space. Together we will welcome my disengaged students back to the learning community.
