Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a Speech-Language Pathologist, I am privileged to work with a group of innovative, curious, and determined students. Some are learning to have conversations with friends and others are learning to say "no." They are a tapestry of experiences, strengths, and needs. They teach me more than I teach them.
We learn together to build friendships, self-efficacy, and meaningful skills.
At our elementary school, we believe in providing learning through functional activities that will prepare scholars for the next step of their journeys. We believe in celebrating all accomplishments and accessing general education in individual ways. We love to explore with all our senses, dance to silly songs, and see how quickly we can finish challenging games.
My Project
As a white person, I grew up and continue to live with the privilege of constantly seeing my culture, identity, language, and community represented in books. I was able to constantly connect and relate to the stories I read in and out of school. This is not okay. The books that fill my library continue to be white-dominated and animal dominated and that is not reflective of the students I work with.
My students need to feel empowered, heard, respected, validated, and interested when they read books; one way this happens is through books they can relate to.
Some of these books are Spanish or bilingual, as my elementary school is dual language, some are board books to allow access points for those with emerging literacy skills and center around children of color. I will use these books to teach language skills and to take a step towards my students taking up space in their community.
