My students need 12 "Chick Lit" books such as Skinny and Bitter End, that show them that girls are way stronger than the media tries to portray.

My Students
Emma Watson, best known as Hermione Granger, now acts as a goodwill ambassador for UN Women: "I decided I was a feminist and this seemed uncomplicated to me, but my recent research has shown me that feminism has become an unpopular word... Why is the word such an uncomfortable one?"
My students are a group of developing readers from a small sub-rural high school in Michigan.
They want to explore and squash stereotypes in a truly authentic way, and with their new-found love of reading, they understand that this kind of exploration is possible through BOOKS!
My Project
Like the young Emma Watson, my students have started questioning gender-based assumptions in our Humanities class.
Instead of being called "bossy" when they're showing leadership qualities, I want my female students to stand up to this oppressive imbalance. And like Watson's call to action, I want my male students to learn how to express their feelings without fear from societal pressures to "man up."
Students---both male and female---will have the opportunity to read books such as Skinny and Bitter End, as part of our choice reading challenge. These titles help push the norm, allowing us to see "gender as a spectrum, instead of two sets of opposing ideals. [They will invite us] to stop defining each other by what we are not, and start defining ourselves by who we are."
Donations to this project will help empower male and female students to question gender bias by reading books about female characters who move beyond the faulty standard of "chick lit."
