My students need a set of book boxes and class unit sets of four books: "Caddie Woodlawn" "The Courage of Sarah Noble", "Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing", and "The Sign of The Beaver."
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a NYC public school teacher whose third grade students come from all over the world. Our diversity is our wealth and although we serve a high needs area, our students are motivated and eager learners. Our school is Title I free lunch eligible.
My class has many talented readers and due to the economic restraints on our already strapped budget I am unable to supply them with new and interesting books that will grab their attention and harness their eagerness to learn. My library has become mundane and the students who are reading above their grade level are left with few books to choose from as the year has progressed. They stare at the library and dread reading time.
I want to pep up their spirits and challenge their minds through literature circle units. Just like adult books clubs they will read vivid and interesting literature that they will analyze and discuss with their classmates. This literature, on their reading level, will allow them the opportunity to hone their reading skills and a give them a chance to challenge themselves as readers. The chance to read and discuss great literature such as "Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing," "Caddie Woodlawn," "The Courage of Sarah Noble," and "Sign of the Beaver" will give my gifted students the focus and drive they need to become life long readers.
Your donation will ensure that we create a culture of learning and allow my students to have a lasting relationship with literature.
