My Students

My students are bright, energetic, and oh-so-curious! These fourth and fifth grade students come from different socioeconomic backgrounds and nationalities to form a special kind of learning community in my gifted education enrichment classroom in a small city in Mississippi.

Students come to my gifted class once a week eager to get their minds working and their hands dirty as we tackle projects that develop critical thinking, problem-solving strategies, and team-building.

I am fortunate to work with my students for two consecutive years, and that means I have to keep the learning new, fresh, and exciting. My students teach me as much as I teach them and I do my best to keep up!

My Project

I am requesting incentives like certificates, trophies, games, and STEM kits to motivate them to work hard and to reward them when they meet a goal. With your help, I can create a Treasure Chest of coveted prizes that will motivate five classes of curious and passionate students to push themselves harder than they ever have before to set and achieve ambitious goals throughout the year.

In our gifted classroom, students strive to excel by setting goals for themselves and celebrate what they accomplish with a growth mindset.

Students work independently on a series of above-grade-level Challenges in ELA and Math that emphasize creative and critical thinking skills. Students also employ the spirit of "coopertition" (cooperation + competition) by participating in a series of Team Challenges in social studies and science that emphasize research skills and teamwork.

Students work hard all year long, and when they meet a goal I like to celebrate them as "Challenge Masters." While I encourage intrinsic motivation and pride as the ultimate prize, tangible rewards are a potent motivating factor in elementary school! Students who earn an A average on above-grade-level Challenges earn a trip to our classroom Treasure Chest to pick a reward. Team Challenge Winners encourage each other to push beyond what they thought they were capable of to beat their competition and win a special prize and bragging rights. Incentive rewards can get pricy for me as a teacher, but the students are worth it!
