Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach mathematics (geometry) in a low income, highly diverse school environment. Our school has over thirty-five hundred students and we speak a total of more than forty different languages. That being said, a majority of my students are also English Language Learners who are struggling to acquire the math register and a new language concurrently. Many of my students are disengaged with school, whether it be due to absences or lack of manipulatives. I need these materials to help them re-engage and connect with the material on a deeper level. I can help students find school to be an enriching experience if I keep them motivated and wanting to attend class. I can do this with classroom materials that help me assign differentiated work and address whole-group misconceptions. I need these materials so that my students can begin to see themselves as mathematicians and important contributors to the learning process. Classroom supplies will help close the achievement gap and help support my classroom. The addition of these materials in my classroom will help level the playing field and give students the opportunity to work with materials they do not have access to at home.
My Project
In a classroom loved by two math teachers, we share a common relic: Our chalkboard. Spanning the entire length of the room, this board gets dusty and dirty by the end of block 1, with 5 more to go the rest of the day. As a temporary fix to this issue, a 10ft. piece of plywood painted with whiteboard paint was installed. As you can imagine, the quality of this board produces glares and dirties easily as it is not a normal dry-erase material. The board is warped and hanging on by a thread, and we are asking for donations so that our students can better engage with our lessons. As our district moves to a Hybrid learning model, and are sitting behind plexiglass and masks, we want their in-class or virtual streaming experience to be as high-quality as we can. A new whiteboard would ensure that students in and out of the classroom can clearly see what is being written on the board.
