My Students

“Organization is what you do before you do something, so that when you do it, it’s not all mixed up.” I love this quote because learning to organize is very new to my first graders. We're just learning how to care for our belongings. Chair pockets can help my students learn how to do this.

My students are a fun, intelligent, and diverse group of first graders who attend a low-income, Title I school in Idaho.

They come in each day ready to learn and I love greeting each of their smiling faces at the door. Each student is a vital member of our class.

My Project

In our first grade classroom we do not have desks. We work at tables instead. This presents some challenges as we do not have a place at the tables to store individual supplies. We either have to keep supplies on top of the tables, resulting in supplies becoming an easy distraction, or in cubbies, which can result in loss of instructional time. When supplies are kept in cubbies, students have to go get their supplies out of their cubbies, preventing them from being able to start their work immediately. Chair pockets which can be hung on the back of a chair will allow students to keep their supplies at their tables which will minimize distractions. The chair pockets will also help students learn the organizational skills that they are just beginning to learn in first grade by requiring them to organize the materials in their pockets so that they can quickly and easily locate the supplies they need for the task at hand.

Chair pockets will help make our class a home.

Chair pockets will prevent loss of instructional time by minimizing distractions and by preventing the need for students to go get their supplies from a cubby before being able to begin their work immediately. These pockets will also help students begin to learn the organizational skills that they will need as they learn and grow.
