Chair or No Chair I Want to Play Too!

My students need a wheelchair accessibility ramp that provides safe entry and exit of the gross motor play area to join in outdoor fun playing along side peers with and without chairs.

My Students

My students are 3, 4 and 5-year-olds who are curious and excited to experience and learn new things in a safe, welcoming environment meeting thier most basic needs and finding ways to overcome those that impede our learning. The majority of our building enrolled students are English language learners and near half have some level of services for a disability. My students live in a large city where the sense of a caring community and environmental safety and health can be difficult to find. All of my children are already considered educational disadvantage simply based on their community, school and family finding themselves stuck in the cycle of living near, at or below the poverty level. The labels create a harsh barrier to success but will not defeat us.

These small miracles of life are still demonstrating resilience and courage to make thier little light shine through.

Even with the challenges faced, we gather daily at school with a positive expectation that new knowledge we gain here together will be the continuation of our foundation for success and pave our way to opportunities to further all our learning and success.

My Project

This project is specific to our students who live on wheels. No matter if the child is leg walking, wheelchair rolling or other assisted mobility equipment reliant they are no different in the human desire to be able to independently chose to join thier peers in play. The ramp will provide years of opportunities to children to join thier peers utilizing thier individually design mobility need. The secure and work in progress to be specially adaptive for all needs outdoor gross motor area is being build one need at a time. Today a ramp to access the area beyond the long stretch of multiple steps down to its play zone is the next desire for many children within our school which not only my preschoolers will benefit from but we also want to share with thier siblings and friends up to our 8th grade enrollment. This ramp will give each child continued access to the play area as long they grow and learn in our school.
