Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Si se puede!" is our motto in my class, but to we also believe that to get smarter you have to work hard, there's no free rides in my class!
My students are almost exclusively native Spanish speakers from Latino families, many of which are recent immigrants or first generation families.
They come mostly from low socioeconomic backgrounds, many are two parent households where both parents work or are at home with younger siblings. However, their parents highly value education, but unfortunately they sometimes lack the knowledge or skills to help their children succeed in school. Our mission is to nurture:
*Proficient critical thinkers with a passion for learning
*Caring, culturally aware bilingual students
*Confident individuals who apply life skills
*Well-rounded, proactive members of society
We do this through integrated thematic instruction and project based learning.
And all at the same time having fun!
My Project
We currently have a school garden that is in a state of disrepair and our first graders have been trying for a couple of years to revive it, but we lack the resources to make it the valuable learning tool it can be. We also want to reach out to the surrounding community so they can take part and ownership in the garden, even using it to provide food for families in need.
We need a table top planter, 'roots, shoots, buckets & boots' a live butterfly garden, planter set and a sprout & grow greenhouse to revive our school garden while at the same time developing a love for learning through hands-on science lessons and community service! Our students will learn about science, math, and social studies as well as building vocabulary in both English and Spanish through their experiences in the garden, making learning fun and meaningful at the same time.
By donating to our project, you will provide inner-city children with the opportunity to develop valuable lifeskills and at the same time advance their learning through hands-on projects all throughout the year, and at the same time reaching out to our community!
