My Students

Splendid, magnificent, disappointing... What if these words crept into the daily vocabulary of first graders? It is possible with the help of a few good books featuring a beloved character named Fancy Nancy!

I teach first grade in an urban elementary school.

Nearly 100% of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch, and most come from households in which English is not the first language. Vocabulary acquisition is difficult for many of my students, but despite this, my students are eager to learn and to become proficient readers, writers, and speakers.

My Project

I am requesting a collection of Fancy Nancy books for our classroom library. Fancy Nancy, the main character, is a young girl approximately the age of my students. She enjoys using new, "fancy" words to tell her stories. The words used in these books are very vivid - delectable, dazzling, zany - yet are explained in a way that is easy for young readers to understand. Further, the books set a good example for strong writing that my first graders can easily adopt in their own writing. Many of the titles I have selected are books the students can read independently by the end of the school year, while others will first be read aloud before becoming well-worn favorites in our student library.

Your donation of a set of Fancy Nancy books will expose my students to exciting new vocabulary words.

Having these books at their fingertips will enable my students to acquire powerful vocabulary words that will improve their reading comprehension, writing quality, and oral language.
