Ceramics at full STEAM

My Project

Ceramic glazing, the process of applying a glassy substance to ceramic objects before firing them in a kiln, isn't usually termed "STEAM" directly, but it can be part of STEAM education. In this educational approach, which encourages student choice and exploration, ceramic glazing fits well. Scientific principles underpin the understanding of glaze chemistry and firing reactions. Technology plays a role in digital design tools and kiln firing processes. Engineers consider kiln design and material interactions. Artistic expression thrives through glaze application and decorative techniques, while mathematics guides precise measurements and temperature calculations.

Through ceramic glazing, students gain hands-on experience that spans disciplines, nurturing creativity, problem-solving, and an appreciation for interdisciplinary connections.

These special glazes give students a lot more choice while creating their ceramics projects. Student choice is the basis of STEAM educational philosophy; student learn more meaningfully when they are able to guide their own learning.
