Help me give my students materials like a Teachers Pay Teachers gift card and gardening play set
for hands-on dramatic play centers so they can practice their Spanish and English in authentic ways.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
In any early childhood classroom, it's essential students make connections between the curriculum and their everyday lives. Personal connections increase engagement and make learning relevant. Dramatic play centers involve setting up a section of the room to stimulate pretend play. Perhaps the puppet stage becomes a bakery, where students explore the connection between farmers and townspeople, goods and services, and consumers and providers. Or, perhaps the dramatic play corner becomes a tree farm, where students are in charge of planting tree seeds, caring for the saplings, and pricing the trees that are ready to be sold for winter holidays.
In dramatic play centers, I can embed academic skills into play scenarios, where students have opportunities to practice reading, writing, and counting in Spanish in child-friendly ways that relate to their daily lives.
By funding this project, you are helping to provide environmental activities thqat I can print and prepare through Teachers Pay Teachers resources. You are also providing hands-on objects that assist in bringing these play scenarios to life. The flower and bakery items relate to several units: stories, plants, farms, colonial towns and townspeople, and taking care of the earth. They will be used again and again throughout the year in a variety of ways.
My students are amazing, this year and every year. The 2023-24 kindergarten dual language cohort has been especially motivated to learn new Spanish vocabulary through visual images and body movements. They've been applying Spanish vocabulary using the other resources in the classroom, and I know they would learn even more with hands-on dramatic play centers.
