Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Try and remember what subject you struggled with the most. What types of activities helped you grow in that subject? Did you prefer to read worksheets or did you learn through hands-on activities?

My students attend a K-8 school in a rural part of town.

The majority of the population is Hispanic, so most of my students are English Language Learners. About 95% of my students participate in the federally funded lunch program. They are extremely bright, but because they lack supplies or funding, my students do not always get the same opportunities as students in other districts. My students are eager to learn. Our school is an active part of the community, creating a family environment within our halls.

My Project

In our classroom we have "literacy baskets" and "math baskets" that we fill with manipulatives and activities for students to rotate through each day. These activities review past concepts and reinforce the new concepts. The manipulatives requested would enhance the centers activities. Each of the requested manipulatives would be used by the students during centers preparing them not only for the tests, but also allowing them to develop independent work skills.

Students learn best when they are actively involved in any subject, especially at the primary level.

Center rotations keep students actively involved physically and mentally. During center rotations students develop independent learning skills and enhanced social skills used to work with their teams. The skills my students acquire during centers rotation are essential for future educational and career goals.
