My Students

I teach a lively group of 5th graders at a public school in a large, urban school district. Many of them are English language learners in homes where caregivers speak limited to no English. About 50% qualify for free and/or reduced school breakfast and lunch.

Because 5th graders tend to be particularly social, our day is structured to provide a lot of partner and group interaction.

Students are encouraged to ask questions, challenge assumptions, learn from their mistakes, be problem solvers, think critically about the world around them, and support each other in their learning. They gain understanding of working as part of a team by navigating through the process of cooperating with others.

In addition to academic and social skills, I also try to help my students develop a sense of empathy toward others. Every year, we participate in a service learning project designed to give something back to people in our own community or the world at large. We have organized shoe drives, held fundraisers for science and environmental organizations, written to patients at a local children's hospital, and sent cards and books to the children who were living at Standing Rock, among others.

My Project

Many of us are familiar with the Laura Ingalls Wilder series of books about a family of white settlers living in the 1800s. I myself loved and devoured those books as a child, not understanding at the time how its treatment of indigenous people as "others" served to marginalize Native Americans in the minds of many school children. I want my students to see history through a lens ,other than the mainstream one that many of us grew up with.

Instead of these Eurocentric narratives, I want my students to learn about Westward Expansion through the eyes of someone indigenous to this land.

In her Birchbark House series, Louise Erdrich reverses the narrative perspective used in books like Little House on the Prairie on nineteenth century Native Americans. In these books, readers follow an Ojibwe girl as her life is subsequently affected by colonialism, forced migration, and the restrictive mandates of the US government.

I am requesting a class set of the first book in this series that we can all read together, as well as smaller sets of the other 4 books to use in literature circles and guided reading groups. Throughout this literature study unit, I hope to de-center Columbus and the European view of this period in American history and make native people visible.
