Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are interested in the world around them. They are city kids with a keen interest in learning new things. They love to explore, to write, to build and to read. They come into my class with little to no socialization, so we spend the beginning of our year learning procedures and how to be good students.
My students come from an impoverished background, but they also have strong family ties and parents who want the best for them.
Our school is very large and with the latest state budget cuts, our class will be much larger than normal. This won't stop us from becoming a school family looking out for each other and learning everything we can in this first pivotal year of school.
My Project
My students don't have a lot of things at home. Though their hearts are large, school is a very exciting place with new things to learn with and explore. Children in Kindergarten learn best through creative play. Our dramatic play area needs costumes and appliances for the kids to immerse themselves in the experience. As a teacher I can harness that excitement for new experiences with new materials. We need sight word stations like the sight word steps and the fishing for sight word games. Because my classroom is so small and there are so many children in it, I asked for duplicates so students can work together communicating and sharing the materials. I need to be able to rotate out items to keep it fresh. Students love the novelty of coming in to a center that has been remade. I love watching their discovery and interactions as they learn to help each other navigate the many requirements of kindergarten.
