I teach 24 enthusiastic Kindergarten students. It is the first classroom experience for many of my students. They are at an age where art, movement, and dramatic play are the most meaningful and exciting times of the day. So many concepts can be reinforced during these times. My students come from many different cultural backgrounds. Some of my students come from low income families who qualify for free or reduced price lunch, some have special needs and have an Individualized Education Plan, and others are second language learners. This diverse group of learners use art as a tool to express learning through fine motor development, personal development, and imagination.
My Project
The Hands-on experience is by far the best learning environment any early childhood teacher can offer their students! With the declining budgets that schools are facing, the materials are scarce. By funding my project, you will put letter stamps into the hands of children where they can create words, stamp them onto the paper and then read and illustrate to create meaning. The phonemic awareness puzzles will allow my students to match rhyming words and increase their first sound fluency while engaged in a fun activity. The sight word practice cards will give students the opportunity to practice their printing skills while practicing age appropriate sight words. The story starter cards will spark the child's inner imagination and allow them to create stories they never thought they could without even knowing it. These literacy centers are indeed a very important part of daily activities in kindergarten, since they encourage independent learning as well as working with others to improve the skills that they are expected to learn.
