My students need independent math tasks, such as games and place value charts, for a new math center in our busy classroom.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Math is our friend! So many children are afraid of math, and this fear can come from not creating a positive relationship with math at an early age. I teach Second Grade in a high-need, multi-lingual community in an urban setting.
With limited funds for classroom resources, purchasing colorful, standard-based math games and resources is secondary to basic classroom needs, such as crayons, glue and rulers. Having feared math until I became a teacher, I understand how important it is to make math fun and practical. I also know that the confidence of a student can increase if they can independently figure out a math problem in a fun way. It's amazing to watch this process happen!
I would like to treat my students to a new Math Center, which is an independently run location in my classroom where the students can freely approach the "Math Buffet" and choose games or activities that interest them. In addition, I can use the games and resources to differentiate the needs of all students. The games and problem solving cards are an excellent resource to use when working one-on-one, or in a small group setting. Also, the Center book will prove an excellent resource in creating mini-centers the students can take to their desks. I could also use the ideas to make new games or have the students design their own, based on the class resources. This helps them "think backwards", which reinforces their understanding of Math concepts.
Your generous donation would make it possible to create a fabulous Math Center in my classroom. I can't wait to get started!
