My Students

I teach at an inner-city Illinois elementary school. I teach 6th grade. My students are from low-income families and are eligible for free lunch. As a teacher and lover of science, I want to instill my love for discovery, exploration and inquiry in my students.

I recently began to teach my students about human genetics and they really showed an interest in the topic.

We now have compelling scientific discussions regarding mutations and heredity. Because my students have shown such an overwhelming interest in science I would like to continue the momentum gained and introduce them to microscopic anatomy. However, microscopic science theory is great but adding lab experiences really will make the topic come alive!

My Project

The resource that I need for this project is a digital microscope. This will allow me to have different microscope stations in my class. The digital microscope will make it possible for me to show all of my students examples as I lecture. I will also be able to take live-image pictures of slides that I create enabling me to use them in future lessons. With the pond microscope slides my students will view pond organisms such as blue-green algae, green algae, protozoans, plants, and animals. The typical plant and animal cell slides allow my students to compare and contrast plant and animal cells. These five slides demonstrate the basic similarities and differences between animal and plant cells. The slides include human cheek cells, Amphiuma liver, cork, onion bulb epidermis, and privet leaf. stations

This project is also important to my curriculum because I want my students to have the same opportunities as their peers in better funded school districts.

By introducing my students to a fascinating field of science, their interest in science will grow and perhaps one day they will become scientists themselves. My students and I would be greatly appreciative if you are able to fund our project.
