My Project
Literature is the path to advancement in careers, passions and finance. Our students need to be strong readers. It is key for their advancement in school to be able to read with fluency and comprehension. In second grade students need to develop a love of reading. This will then transfer in building their reading fluency which directly positively correlates to their ability to comprehend the text. Students should see themselves, their families and their cultures in the text.
A quarter of my students are from the Philippines but there is only one story, "Cousins Forever" about the Filipino culture.
Where is the diversity in literature? How can these kids see themselves as readers when they aren't presented with books showcasing their community? In contrast there are three shelves that contain stories written in Caucasian narrative.
Your donation can change everything. The majority of the books chosen on this list present my students with a path to their homeland. No longer will they have to read the same book day after day to have access to their culture. Literature stemming from their own culture will also increase their sense of belonging in school.
