My Students

I teach transitional kindergarten at a Title I school and 100% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Our school sits within the small city of Muskegon Heights, filled with low-income households. Despite growing up in a place where there are more things working against our little learners, they come to class with big smiles, jokes to tell, and big dreams of learning at school one day.

My Project

I aspire to instill a lifelong love for learning and reading. I want to build a classroom library that represents every single one of my amazing little kiddos.

My students need to see themselves in the books we read because representation matters.

A diverse classroom library filled with books and characters helps build positive self-images and inspires students to embrace their beautiful differences in our world.

Books like Born Ready: The True Story of a Boy Named Penelope and I am Perfectly Designed, will help students embrace who they are. Books like Beatrice's Goat, Fry Bread: A Native American Family, and The Oldest Student, will allow students from all backgrounds to see characters that look like them!

The books I selected will help my students recognize how special they are, in their unique ways. I am determined to help my little ones feel special, celebrate their differences, and support their social-emotional growth.
