My students are an amazing group of third graders. They are enthusiastic about school and embrace everything we do in class. They love reading, P.E., math and science. Our school is a Kindergarten through eighth grade school located in rural Northern California. It houses 450 students. Our school is surrounded by forests and mountains and has daily visitors such as geese, turkeys and deer.
My school had a fire on January 26.
I lost my entire classroom to smoke damage. The materials requested in this project are to help my students and I rebuild our classroom and supplies.
My Project
I am requesting books that focus on tolerance and diversity. Many of these titles are to replace the books that were lost in the January 26 school fire.
The books will be used in a variety of ways.
Some will be used as read alouds. The books will be springboards for discussion on differences and accomplishments of the characters in the books.
Some of the books will be placed in our classroom library. Our school uses Accelerated Reader (AR), a program that quizzes students on the stories they have read independently. All the titles chosen are AR compatible.
Some of the books will be used for books reports and for our 40 Book Challenge. Students will be challenged to read 40 books this year and will record their reflection on the books they read in interactive journals. They will record thoughts, feelings, likes, dislikes and much more! Having titles that focus on tolerance and diversity will give students deep topics on which to reflect.
