My Students
Young elementary school students are, by nature, rather egotistical. This is not meant to say that they are mean-spirited -- quite the opposite! Young students are some of the most accepting, loving people in the world. It's just that they only really understand their own lives and beliefs.
I teach at a small school in Washington state.
My school is classified as a high-poverty school, with many students on the free and reduced-price lunch program. My classroom of students is always made up of a wide variety of abilities, interests, and challenges. From learning support students, to English language learners, to gifted students -- I am here to teach them all and give them the best education!
My Project
I want to help my students understand the beauty of people's differences. I want to teach them all of the beautiful traditions people in our country and around the world have. I want them to experience diversity through multiculturalism. The best way I know of to do this is to provide my students with BOOKS. That is why I am requesting a variety of picture books, all of which tell the stories of many different holidays that people around the world celebrate. My students will learn about others by reading about the Chinese New Year, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Cinco de Mayo, and more!
Books are a powerful tool.
I want to use them to teach my students to appreciate the beauty of people's diversity. I want them to experience multiculturalism right in their own classroom! Thank you so much for your help with this endeavor!
