My students are creative middle schoolers who are interested in exploring the world of art. Students manipulate a variety of media in our classroom as they find a variety of solutions to challenges they approach with visual answers. Our school is a great place for learning and I am proud of the accomplishments of our students, which include recognition at local, State, and National competitions. In addition to achieving this success, my students are interested in giving back to the community through a variety of charitable activities.
My Project
The materials for this project will engage families in students' learning in a few ways during our Arts a la Mode Night that features our Fine Arts programming while raising food and funds for our local food bank. First, students will use the glaze to complete their bowls for our Annual Empty Bowls event that benefits our community's food bank. Students craft bowls and invite their families to donate either food or funds and take a bowl home with them as a reminder of those they have helped.
This night also showcases student learning through art in the hall and parents are invited to view and engage with the work throughout the evening.
The frames and tape requested in this project will be used to showcase student learning and engage parents in viewing as well as commenting on the work.
In addition, students will lead workshops for creating art during this event and that includes an interactive LEGO mural in the hallway and other hands-on activities. This activity benefits my students because they see their work as having the power to make a positive change in their community. In addition, students are asked to lead the workshops and this allows them the opportunity to teach others throughout the evening.
