Celebrating Black History Year-Round with Great Books

My students need grade level texts that celebrate their heritage like the "King School" series, Scholastic leveled books, and "I Am Jackie Robinson."

My Students

The "word detectives" have been working hard in reading intervention to catch up to grade level. However, the characters in most stories do not look or share their heritage or are not on their reading level. Help us inspire our students with great books that celebrate black history and culture.

Our students walk up our stairs every day with smiles on their faces ready to learn.

They embody our school's values of growth and hard work. Our Title I school is a first year turn-around and part of Michelle Obama's turn-around arts program. Almost all of our Kindergarten to Second Grade students are below grade level in reading and face many struggles both academically and at home.

My Project

Our students will use the texts as an in-school library. At the beginning of reading interventions, students will select books from the library that are "just right" for them. "Just right" books are on a student's reading level and are interesting to them. Currently, our school lacks "just right" books for students to check out. This gap is affecting student investment in reading. These texts will provide students with the opportunity to learn more about African American heroes and access texts that are on their reading level.

These books are going to open doors and imaginations for students.

They will inspire students. These books will empower students. They will bring joy to students. Students for the first time in their academic experience will have the opportunity to select books with characters who look like them and share their heritage. We can build the love of reading for all students!
