Celebrate the Quaranteen Class of 2020

Help me give my students a small way to celebrate the big accomplishment of graduating high school.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Jordan's classroom raised $849

My Students

The Class of 2020 has inspired me since I started teaching them as sophomores three years ago. They have encountered and endured hardship throughout their lives, both in the academic and home realms, yet they are the most happy-go-lucky, dedicated, and bright young men I have ever met.

Many of my students will be the first of their family to graduate high school, and most of them will be first generation college students.

Many were already working to help support their family, and now that they don't have a structured school schedule, they are working even longer hours, while also maintaining their course work.

Despite the fact that well over 50% of our students are economically disadvantaged and 43% at-risk, the Class of 2020 has shown that they will not be another unfortunate statistic.

My Project

I have had the honor of teaching the Class of 2020 since they were sophomores. These young men have forged a family that I have not see before, seeing as how many of them not only have spent their full high school career together, but also their middle school years, since our school is 6th - 12th grade.

It's difficult for words to express the loss we feel of the last few months of their senior year of high school.

These young men were looking forward to their Senior Academic Signing/Decision Day where they get to feel like academic athletes. On the daily announcements there were updates of who got accepted to which colleges, and the scholarships they earned. They showed me pictures of the suits they were going to wear to prom, and I overheard discussions about Senior Pranks.

I truly love these kids and am heartbroken at our loss. That is why I want to help them celebrate an accomplishment that, for many, will be the first high school graduation in their family, and for others, was a long and winding road to success.

This project will allow each student to get an individualized, hand written Thank You card, a graduation balloon, confetti, and an inspirational book. Although I am a social studies teacher I believe that the relationship with students is the most important thing. That is why I want to thank them for everything that they have taught ME, and for all of the wonderful moments we have had together.

Lastly, I chose the book "Things Are What You Make of Them: Life Advice for Creatives" because I am one of the teachers that they trust and ask advice from. Our young men have grown into being young gentlemen, and emotional wellness is so important!
