Celebrate Pride: Spirit Items for Support and Inclusion!

My Project

As a school counselor, creating a supportive environment for all students is incredibly important. During our recent Rainbow Spirit Day celebrating Pride Month, many of our students stated that they either did not own or could not afford rainbow items or spirit items that represented their identities. Due to the generosity of some staff members, we were able to provide a limited number of bracelets, flags, and pins. Students’ faces lit up when they were able to carry around a rainbow flag and celebrate Pride. We would like to increase the availability of these spirit items to include more options and to be widely available for distribution by LGBTQ+ supportive organizations and to allies in our school.

Having widely available pride spirit items allows our LGBTQ+ students to know that they are supported by their peers and adults in the building, which helps to foster a positive and inclusive learning environment.

Students can share these flags, bracelets, buttons, and ribbons with supportive friends, family, and staff to illustrate that they are not alone in their desire to feel supported. These spirit items would provide our students with ways to represent themselves as either allies or members of the LGBTQ+ community so they can show their support!
