My Project
My students must learn the skills of reading, writing, and analysis. With the competition of our fast-paced society and technology, student interest and connection to text is even more important now.
Our school, situated in the heart of an Asian neighborhood in San Francisco, is dedicated to fostering a diverse and inclusive learning environment that resonates with our students' lived experiences."The Best We Could Do" serves as a poignant and heartfelt love letter to immigrants from Vietnam who settle in Oakland, CA, making it particularly resonant for our student body.
The narrative beautifully captures the nuances of the immigrant experience, providing a mirror for our students, many of whom are first or second-generation immigrants, or have parents and grandparents with similar stories. The book serves as a powerful catalyst for self-reflection, fostering empathy, understanding, and appreciation for the rich tapestry of our community.
Having introduced this book to our students in the past, we've witnessed not only their enjoyment but also their deep connection to the material. Many have expressed how they see themselves in the characters and situations. By donating to our school, you will be enhancing this connection for our students and their engagement with the text, making it an invaluable tool for teaching analysis and writing at this age level. In our class, we focus on both character development and tone, overall focusing on how the characters have faced trauma that shapes them and their family, but did "The Best They Could".
Your support in acquiring two class sets of "The Best We Could Do" will undoubtedly contribute to the academic and personal growth of our students. Your generosity will help us create an enriching learning experience that fosters cultural understanding, empathy, and critical thinking skills.
