My Project

February is Black History Month, a time to celebrate the achievements and contributions of African Americans to history, culture and society and a time to reflect on the often-overlooked contributions of people of color. My fourth graders and I will read these beautiful books to give us insight into a variety of perspectives to spark conversations and inspiration as we celebrate progress around issues of equality.

Engaging books such as, Carter Reads the Newspaper, explore the little-known details behind Carter G Woodson, the father of Black History Month, who spent his life introducing others to the history of his people.

You never know when a spark of an interest or passion will be ignited through the books we read. Perhaps it will be sparked after reading, Patricia's Vision: The Doctor Who Saved Sight or Alma's Art. My hope is to encourage and validate my students while empowering all students to be strong and confident to see they can be anything they want to be!

As an educator, I guide and facilitate my fourth graders to read with a critical lens, to be thinkers and changers, and to recognize that not all stories are told nor are all historical figures represented in the images that surround us. I strive to offer an inclusive look at the world around us by highlighting diverse people who helped make our nation what it is today. My hope is that my students see themselves reflected in our curriculum, as my curious and clever fourth graders celebrate Black History Month.
