My Students

As a teacher of English language learners, I have many opportunities to watch my students engage in language experiences and become world citizens. Across three different school sites, I serve 57 students, all of which are learning English and come from multilingual and multicultural backgrounds. These students show enthusiasm not only towards learning a new cultural and new language, but also towards building a learning community. They bring unique experiences and knowledge to our schools and have goals to either go to a technical college, a 2 year college, or a 4 year university.

My Project

Many of my students come to school and it looks really different than their home culture and sounds really different than their home language. I'd like to use these books to help my students celebrate where they come from and share the unique backgrounds and skills they bring. I will use these books during class to invite students to share their lives and share in the lives of their classmates. But that's not all!

I also plan to invite parents to an after school club to continue using books and stories to promote understanding and celebration.

I am hopeful that sharing these resources with parents and inviting them to be experts on their culture will encourage active participation from all parent groups.
