Celebrate Extraordinary Environmentalists and Inventors to Inspire Our Future

Help me give my students extraordinary books about black environmentalists and inventors to read during Black History Month as well as recyclable paper bags and recycling bins to inspire my learners to make our world a better place.

My Project

February is Black History Month, a time to celebrate the achievements and contributions of African Americans to our environment and society. My fourth graders and I will read these beautiful books to give us insight into a variety of perspectives to spark conversations and inspiration as we celebrate progress around issues of equality.

Extraordinary books such as, Saving American Beach: The Biography of African American Environmentalist MaVynee Betsch, will introduce my fourth graders to an African American opera singer turned environmentalist and the legacy she preserved as we aim to preserve and protect our planet and make a difference with the Extraordinary Earth Project.

You never know when a spark of an interest or passion will be ignited through the books we read. Perhaps it will be sparked after reading, Saving the Day: Garrett Morgan's Life-Changing Invention of the Traffic Signal. My hope is to encourage and validate my students while empowering all students to be strong and confident to see they can be anything they want to be!

As an educator, I guide and facilitate my fourth graders to read with a critical lens, to be thinkers and changers, and to recognize that not all stories are told nor are all historical figures represented in the images that surround us. I strive to offer an inclusive look at the world around us by highlighting diverse people who helped make our nation what it is today. These inspirational books will help my students take action to protect our planet with recyclable paper bags and recycle bins to place on campus to be changemakers. My hope is that my students see themselves reflected in our curriculum, and that my curious and clever fourth graders celebrate Black History Month while saving the planet.
