Help me give my students books and crayons that celebrate diversity, and a cart that will provide a place to keep materials so they are accessible to all students.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
First grade is full of magic. I have 18 students in my classroom this year and they are ready to learn. It is amazing to watch each child's progress during the year. This school year has been different than all the others. We have been distance learning since March. It is challenging to meet the needs of all students.
My school is in one of the largest school districts in California.
These students come from diverse backgrounds and many of them do not have access to science materials. Our school receives free lunch. We have 67% Hispanic population. Some students come from homes that only speak Spanish.
Our school has some parent involvement and an after-school program that is limited to how many students they enroll. The after-school program is a lottery system and only two of my current students are enrolled in the program. The program provides students with extra tutoring and homework help
My Project
My first graders come from different ethnicities and backgrounds. The books will help me create lessons that celebrate diversity. Read alouds are very important because they provide opportunities to learn new vocabulary words and comprehension strategies in books they may not be able to read independently just yet. I also believe it's important for students to see people from different backgrounds in the books they read. The cart will provide a place for all students to have access to the materials. I want to create a comfortable reading corner where students can read books on their own with a variety of genres.
