My Students

I am blessed to teach second grade at a wonderful Title I school in northeast North Carolina. This is my first year teaching second grade and I have been blessed with 19 diverse, hard-working, easily motivated, and kind students! It has been fun getting to know each one and figuring out new ways to engage, motivate and inspire them each day.

Our school glows bright with students that are excited to learn, work hard, and feel valued when they are given options and choices that show their culture and interests matter!

We are a diverse school consisting of students and families from various backgrounds and cultures, as well as Coast Guard families. They are each unique and have a special way of winning our hearts with their kindness and thoughtfulness. The students and staff at our elementary school have truly become a family to one another!

My Project

My second graders love gathering around my rocking chair each day as I select a "just right" book to read aloud to them. They do not have to be reminded to be quiet or to sit still during this time. They truly are engaged and want to soak in the plot during teacher read aloud time.

I have focused on seasonal books, kindness books, mindfulness books, and popular books for second graders so far this year, but we need books that teach diversity in cultures and diversity even within the same culture.

These books will help me teach my students about diversity and help them learn how to better have compassion and empathy for others. We have two special areas in our classroom where all of the read aloud books are placed once I have read them and discussed them with the class. It is amazing to see how many students select books from those bins to re-read with confidence over and over after hearing me read it to them. These titles will allow my students to learn about various cultures and to also connect with others within their same culture that may be experiencing some of the same things in their own life. Teaching my students about inclusion, diversity and multiculturalism through read aloud time will be a great way to integrate social studies as well into our day.

Thank you for considering our project to include these rich texts for read alouds into our classroom that will help me to teach my students about appreciation, inclusion, and diversity.
