Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I currently teach first grade in Chicago. I have 28 students enrolled in my classroom. The students mostly come from low-income homes and according to the Illinois State Board of Education, 98% of the students at my school were low-income students in 2007-2008.
All of my students are English Language Learners (ELLS), which means that they speak a second language at home that is not English. They do not have the luxury of having someone at home to read a picture book to them in English. Their reading comprehension and fluency would be improved in English if they were read to everyday at home. Unfortunately, this is not possible for most of my students.
I would love to have blank CD's on which to record myself reading stories. This would allow my students to listen at home and follow along with the text with their finger. This would give them the chance to practice reading at home because I would be modeling appropriate reading techniques. There are many benefits to listening to a fluent reader read such as: gaining new vocabulary, building fluency, and learning appropriate pronunciation. I would also record myself reading some of our spelling words and special vocabulary words that they need to know for that week. These words would be written on a homework sheet and some would have pictures included. They would be able to take these CD's home for their enjoyment and of course to practice!
You can give student's these CD's for extra support at home to help their reading comprehension and fluency. Most importantly, you will help them learn English and gain new vocabulary. I was an ELL student myself and did not have anyone at home to read to me in English, but I did have many books on records that I would listen to for hours. I feel that the books with records that I listened to were partly responsible for my success in learning English and in fostering the love that I have for reading to this day! In addition, these CD's can also help my students’ parents learn some of the vocabulary and spelling words which will allow them to help their children even if their English skills are not that good.
I truly believe my parents want to help, but the language barrier often makes them feel helpless when helping with homework and these CD's can improve their help and they can even learn English. Thank you for your consideration!
