Help me give my students a document camera and a green screen to help bridge the distant learning gap by creating the ultimate, virtual dance classroom that supports all learners.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The world has been deeply impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the massive toll that it has taken on our society and especially our children has been unsettling. Even though our school doors are closed for an indefinite period of time, school is in session, our computers are on and we are safely dancing from our respective homes together, through Zoom.
We are a Title 1 school located in the heart of Hollywood.
All good teaching requires using multiple strategies, resources and tools, so that all learners can access the curriculum. So, in our virtual dance world, I have to come up with different ways to reach my students to spark their creativity and critical thinking through movement.
My students are bright and eager to learn, in order to find their creative voice to bring meaningful understanding to their lives and the world around them. Their resilience and ability to keep dancing is an inspiration to witness. One student recently mentioned that they had a dream that they were dancing.
I know if we continue to offer them the right resources, our shining stars will illuminate with hope to innovate and to reach and accomplish their goals.
My Project
Having a document camera will allow for me to quickly share lesson objects and vocabulary. It will also support showing visual examples of of various skills and concepts. Sometimes when I'm teaching, students will say that they can't see. Having a document camera will be a big game changer, for allowing all students to quickly access the lesson.
Often times, I use various stories as inspiration for connecting movement concepts to stories, and when I'm reading a story, I'm holding the book up to the camera of my computer screen and trying to read it from the side, which is a skill in and of itself.
But with a document reader, I would be able to read the story and the students would be able to follow along, which would be a definite win, win.
In an effort to create the ultimate virtual dance classroom and truly be able to take students on a journey to discover dances across the globe or find inspiration in a painting or nature and create a dance based on that inspiration, with a green screen as my back drop, the possibilities are almost endless. With summer school approaching, these materials would get used right away in creating recorded lessons and also live zoom sessions.
