I am a special educator in the San Francisco Unified School District. I have the absolute pleasure of serving students with severe multiple disabilities in the 3rd through 5th grades. Although our class is small we are busy all day trying to get quality, significant educational experiences for each of our students with such divergent needs. We have students who are blind, non-walkers, non-talkers, two who are just taking their first steps at the ages of 10 & 11, Autism, Arcaidi Syndrome, and seizures. You can imagine how exciting each day is. With such a wide range of ability in one room it is imperative that we keep everyone on-task in and using each part of the day to work on emergent skills.
For our students with limited mobility all aspects of the day must come to them. A student or staff member has to hold and manipulate toys and books for them, as they are unable to hold and grasp objects. These cause/effect toys are GREAT for these students because they can activate them independently! These special toys are attached to switches that are placed within their reach. By using their OWN actions (pressing the switch) they are instantly rewarded by the movement and sounds of these specialized toys. 'Coocoocarookookoo' and 'bark bark' are examples of the rewards they get from the toys. They are thrilled to be the one 'in charge' and thrilled by the rewards.
We would use these toys daily with individuals and small groups. These seven cause/effect toys will enable students to play independently and in groups turn-taking. Having a large variety also will enable them to show preferences and have more choices. We have had a couple in the past but they are on their last legs, having been used so much and so often. We would love to have new toys for these very special students. It is so amazing to see a child 'light up' again and again when they are playing with their favorite toy.
