This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are energetic kids with a love of learning. Over 90% of my students come from low-socioeconomic families. A large percentage of them meet the definition of homeless. Their parents are struggling to pay rent and get food on the table. They are working necessary jobs for us and for their families. My kindergartners worry about their well being, and yet, they still want to explore, create, read, and write! They want to learn and grow.

During this pandemic, my students are sheltering in place with basic classroom supplies and necessities and a small number of books.

I want them to continue to be safe and stay healthy as they work hard to learn to read, learn to use technology, and at the same time, learn Language Art, Math, and Science.

My Project

Since being home with distance learning, I have caught the Science Bug! I am addicted to science experiments! With my students, I started by doing a science experiment online every week. It became a science experiment EVERY DAY! My students and I have had so much fun learning about density and matter and air and force and weather. Achoo!

We have caught a bug (the Science Bug) and there is no stopping us now!

Science is so much fun! We have made play-dough, two kinds of slime, volcanoes and lava lamps and more. I want to continue to share experiments with my students. The cost for ingredients and supplies for the experiments does add up.

Some of these supplies are household items. Others are not typically in homes. For now, we are doing these experiments together online. I share supplies with students at school, as needed, on chosen Food Distribution Days, keeping a six-foot distance, of course. I am looking forward to the fall when we will do the experiments together. I am so excited to share the science bug with my students! Thank you for any help you can give.
