Help me give my students struggling with autism the chance to code with a "code-a-pillar" toy which helps them program just like their able bodied friends.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work in a Title I low income school which integrates students on the Autism Spectrum with their able-bodied peers. Half of our school children have special needs and more than 90% get free lunch. My Kindergarten students are low functioning with Autism which makes focusing on schoolwork hard. My students have a lot of energy and want to change activities after a few moments. I would like sturdy, colorful robots and art supplies in order to engage them in STEAM activities.
I want to help my students with Autism engage in simple computer coding through the use of the Fisher Price Code-a-pillar and other sturdy robots.
These robots allow the children to discover that their actions on the toy cause special effects to occur. Cause and effect is the basis for all coding. These supplies will help them focus and think sequentially in order to make the robot obey their commands.
My Project
My children, using a Fischer Price Coding Caterpillar will be able to independently program this toy on a specific path. The toy has an "engine" and multiple segments indicating forward, backward, right turn, and left turn. The robot toy will do only what the child commands. The child places the segments as he/she desires and lets the robot go. The robot then fulfills the commands.
Autistic kindergarteners using a Fischer Price Coding Caterpillar will be able to independently program the robot just like kids without developmental delays.
It is awesome to allow the students to have a robot which they can use all on their own!
