My students are enthusiastic fifth graders who are eager to learn. They enjoy math and reading! Our school is located in a major city, where poverty levels are high. 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
We are halfway through the year, and my students are BEGGING for new books!
My students are eager to dive into fun and exciting books, and unfortunately, our classroom library doesn't meet their needs. I entered my classroom 6 years ago, and was handed a classroom library, which was already old. Add on six years, and the books are BORING.
My Project
New books would make a world of difference in our classroom. I was fortunate enough to receive new book club books as part of an old Donors Choose project, and it has been really refreshing to see my students use those books to get excited about reading again.
I want my students to get that excited during independent reading, too.
I follow quite a few inspiring teachers on Instagram, and I want to provide my students with the catchy titles I see those teachers bragging about!
I believe that providing my students with new books like Captain Underpants, She Persisted, and Stick Dog will help them re-engage in reading, and in doing so their below grade-level reading levels can rise to where they need to be!
