My students are funny, intelligent, and motivated to do their very best in the classroom. Each student is diverse and unique, but they all have an eagerness to learn. They love reading and they work tirelessly to become better readers each day.
Walter Cronkite once said, "Whatever the cost of our LIBRARIES, the price is CHEAP compared to that of an IGNORANT nation." My students are highly engaged when reading high-quality children's literature, and I want to make sure that they have access to as many of these children's books as possible to keep their love for reading alive.
My students especially love it when I bring out the hands-on learning tools available in our classroom. It is so fun to watch their minds grow and expand as they are manipulating objects that help to solidify the difficult concepts taught in first grade.
In addition to teaching my students content from the core, I am trying to teach them that education is powerful, that it will get them anywhere they want to go, and that it will help them to change the world.
My Project
As research-based best practices suggest, listening to stories read-aloud greatly improves students' reading as it models fluency, accuracy, and expression at a steady rate. These components are crucial to engaging students in the adventures of texts. My students will be able to listen to these high-interest, low-readability texts and then they will be able to practice reading fluently to their partners after listening to the stories.
I LOVE reading high-quality texts aloud to my students.
However, the experience of reading independently and getting lost in a great book is truly invaluable! I want to ensure that I have enough quality children's literature to foster their love for reading.
