My Students
Within my school, almost 90% of students live in poverty. While the school has initiatives that provide students with free breakfast, lunch, snacks, and weekend food bags, many students are unable to come to school with supplies and spend time in classrooms that are not fully equipped with necessary materials.
My fourth graders are resilient individuals who face many challenges when they leave school; although there are a variety of trials in the world, our classroom is a place of solace and success.
Fourth grade is a time where students have deep, clear feelings about school and the world around them - and they let those feelings be known! They are learners who dive into rigorous academic content and require a comfortable, predictable learning environment.
Every student deserves a quality education, and my fourth graders are no exception. They are kind, capable learners who amaze me by what they accomplish daily and throughout the school year.
My students deserve a classroom environment equipped with adequate materials that help them receive a quality education.
My Project
End of year testing is quickly approaching! Test prep at my school begins only a few short weeks from now, and students are gearing up to take state tests in Math, Language Arts, and Virginia Studies.
This classroom carnival will not only refresh my students' knowledge for the upcoming state tests, but also instill valuable financial skills, like saving for items you really want - all while having a blast!
We have a lot of work to do in the next two months before testing, but I want to remind my students through this carnival that they absolutely CAN do it, all while having fun! As students complete review work, they will be recognized with red carnival tickets for effort, effective time management, teamwork, and usage of test-taking strategies which they can use as "entry" for carnival games. For effort that goes above-and-beyond, students will be awarded with the "golden" (yellow) tickets, which are worth TWO tickets each! At the end of each day, carnival games and prize booth will be open for students to spend their hard-earned tickets!
The signs, star banner, and different game boards will help achieve a carnival atmosphere. A variety of prizes will get students excited about their tickets! As students attend the carnival, there will be valuable financial lessons/discussions that will present themselves - the students' "salaries" will be tickets, and they will have to decide the best use for their salary - is it carnival activities? Is a certain prize worth saving up for? To celebrate all of our hard work at the carnival, we will have a raffle for the Fire Tablet and Osmo Genius kit to help students review all summer long! Students will explore these ideas all while having a blast at our carnival!
