Carving: Ancient Egypt Style

My students need foam carving blocks, plaster, paints and SCULPTING TOOLS so we can learn a few different styles of sculpture.

My Students

My school district doesn't provide art supplies beyond pencils and notebook paper. It is very difficult to incorporate art lessons when materials are so hard to come by. These materials will provide my students with a chance to use materials which they may otherwise never get the chance to use.

Our school is in a small town in Northern California.

Our ethnic and economic makeup is extremely diverse with students from all over the globe. Whenever I get a chance to take my students on field trips, docents and tour guides always comment on how nice and respectful our students are compared to their peers from other schools. They are the kind of kids who volunteer to stay after school to work on school projects or study for a test.

My Project

I am asking for 2 different types of foam carving blocks. One type is used to carve a relief into only one side of the foam. The other will be a more traditional style which will be used to emulate the styles of either ancient China or Egypt. It depends when the items arrive. The foam is then coated and painted. -The carving tools will be used to subsidized the few that we already have in our classroom. -The plaster is used to coat the foam so that it has the texture of stone -The paints are for painting the sculptures after final shaping.

A few days ago I asked our custodian (who is responsible for delivering supplies) if we had any clay for sculpture.

She laughed at me as she walked away. Such is the case today in education. We seem to always have enough money to buy new textbooks to replace the ones that were not that warn out but we never have money for art. These two projects will give my students a chance to do something that is important but no longer financially supported by our school system.
