My Students
My students are the 7th and 8th-grade middle school kids in a K-8 school in Queens. A diverse group of students from varying socioeconomic backgrounds, they include all academic levels, students with disabilities, and ICT classes. Ranging in age from 11 to 14, many of them struggle with science and math concepts. They do best with hands-on activities that support what they read about in texts.
They are young adults striving to be the best science students they can be.
My Project
You might not be able to tell from the picture, but getting around in our classroom is difficult. With over 30 kids in some of the classes, when the students are in the room it is hard to squeeze through the tables when we need to pick up, drop off, and clean supplies from our lab activities. I am trying to get a cart on wheels that will easily move supplies around the room, enabling us to do more hands on work which is essential for my kinesthetic and visual learners. The more hands on work we do, the better the students comprehend the material, especially those in 8th grade taking a NYS Regents level science class in middle school. Having the students be responsible for their own lab stations also prepares them for future classes they will take in high school where they use more chemicals and Bunsen burners as well.
More than half of students from low‑income households
