This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My PreK students are in their first year of a PreK-5 Spanish Immersion program. The students come from English, Spanish and other language backgrounds. Our wonderful program has been in existence since the early 1990's but added PreK in 2004. It is a unique opportunity to learn a second language while focusing on social emotional development and kindergarten readiness in a public school setting. Our goal is to foster bilingualism, biliteracy, and biculturalism that will last our students a lifetime.

My Project

It is important to me to offer a variety of outdoor play equipment for my pre-k students. Four year olds love to drive the Little Tykes play cars and use the gas tank to "fill up" on their drive around the track. During our outdoor time, one of the kids' favorite things to do is drive around the track. They use the cars to make believe they are drivers taking each other to the park, to Disneyland, to the grocery store. They stop at the "gas station" to fill up. They also love to direct traffic. These particular toys allow several children to play together which facilitates negotiation and taking turns.

The kids are excited to come to school every day and play with toys that are not available to them outside of school.

We have tricycles but these cars and gas tanks really lend to dramatic play on the playground.

These particular toys can be used by one child alone but also encourage cooperative play which helps children learn to work together, share and take turns, all very important skills in preschool.
