My Project
My classroom has a diverse population comprised of both ELL students and students with IEPS. Eighty-five percent of our school community qualify for free and reduced lunch. Many of our families live below poverty level. Many of my students are latchkey students who have been exposed to trauma. My students have both academic and social emotional needs. One key component and routine in my classroom is to have a comfortable carpeted area for the whole class to convene. It is at the carpet that we meet daily for social emotional checks in, classroom community building activities, daily read alouds, and it is where direct instruction happens. Keeping students engaged is a critical component to ensure academic success and having them close by on the carpet helps support student engagement. Our current carpeted space needs a new carpet. It is old and is not very inviting looking. I am hoping that this project will help create an inviting space that all feel welcome and loved at.
