Help me give my students carpet squares for their own personal space while still being able to come together as a whole class for classroom discussions and lessons.
We teach in a Title 1 school, which means most of our students come from low-income families. Each and every student in our class is unique in their own special way. They deserve the very best when it comes to their learning and we would like more than anything to provide a learning environment that promotes this. We would like to see each one of them feeling comfortable in their own learning by providing resources for them that make them feel excited to learn.
My Project
Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make choices that work best for them. During independent work times, students are able to choose a location in the classroom that works best for them. Currently, our students are choosing to work in a variety of different locations, such as different tables, sitting under tables, or laying on the floor. Making sure our students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them to learn and be accountable for their learning. We have noticed amazing differences in our students when they are given the opportunity to choose their learning spots. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, which ultimately helps them to be more engaged in the lessons, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desks.
The carpet squares that we have selected will help our students by giving them additional seating options within our classroom in order to make more effective learning opportunities.
These will be extremely beneficial for our students who have challenges when it comes to remaining in their own personal space. They will have the ability to move their own carpet square and not infringe upon another classmates' personal learning space.
We have seen how choice can positively affect our students work and overall demeanor and we hope that the additional options to come together as a whole class for lessons and class discussions, while still having their own personal space will help them grow even more!
