My Students
I believe every child deserves the opportunity for an excellent education, and I am proud to partner with my school, other educators, families, and community leaders to strive toward this goal. I teach in a high-poverty school zone in which 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. These amazing students need additional support because most of them come from low-income, single-family households, a majority of which have little to no support or resources. Despite some of the challenges they face in and around their environment, every year my students come to school excited, full of life, and eager to learn.
As the 2016 and 2019 Teacher of the Year, as well as an alumnus of Metro Atlanta, Teach for America, I choose to continue to significantly impact the life trajectories of students in our region’s high-need communities.
My Project
One of the best ways to teach kindergarten students to care for others is through caring for class pets. One of our favorite studies in our kindergarten curriculum is our pet study, and we have recently discovered that many of our children do not have a pet at home nor have they ever experienced caring for a pet. It is our hope that by incorporating a small turtle into our kindergarten class, all of our children will now have the chance to learn about and care for a small animal.
All children need to learn about being responsible and caring for others.
They will be able to help care for, feed, and love the turtle as if they were their own. We will be able to investigate, study, and learn about what they eat, where they live, and what they need to grow and stay healthy.
