My students need calculators in order solve many different types of physics problems.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Having a class set of calculators would be a tremendous help for students who might have an incredible gift for science matched unfortunately with a lack of finances!
Students at this school come from low income, inner city backgrounds.
They have friendly, conscientious attitudes and they work hard to always do their best.
They constantly amaze me with their bright smiles, their eagerness to learn and their ability to overcome adversity.
My Project
The number one goal for my students is to learn as much as possible through inquiry, and that means we do as many lab experiments and activities as possible. These calculators will help students immeasurably!
For example, in the next month alone, we will be doing labs on Hooke's law, pulleys, the law of conservation of energy, impulse, and centripetal force. In each of these activities, students will be using calculators to make predictions as to what their results should be and then comparing them to their experimental results.
My intention is that students will no longer be forced to share and borrow calculators and can use more class time to understand the concepts on a deeper level.
I've been teaching physics for over 16 years and in my experience, the students at this school have proven to be some of the most amazingly talented and gifted that I've ever met.
They have incredible potential!
I really do believe that having a class set of calculators will go a long way in developing their problem solving skills as they work towards becoming the successful scientists, engineers and medical doctors of the future.
