My Students
A typical day in my 12+1+1 (12 students, 1 teacher, 1 paraprofessional) self-contained classroom for students with special needs can be demanding and stimulating I am constantly on my feet. My days are spent constantly redirecting my students' behaviors, teaching to meet the academic needs of each individual student, giving out rewards.
My very energetic middle school students' ages range from 14 -16 years old.
They have different needs ranging from academic to social skills. I have a few students with Autism spectrum, intellectual learning dysfunction, speech impairments and others with behavioral disabilities.
My classroom is project based, therefore my students enjoy creativity and presentations of their projects. My students are always excited to learn about anything to do with computers. They will learn basic "Computer Programming" skills and how to use them to enhance their critical thinking skills.
Our school has a very high poverty rate. Some of our students are homeless and live in shelters. Our school has over 900 students from various diverse backgrounds. Most of our students are not exposed to developing computer skills, which creates an urgent need for them to be Career and College Ready. Therefore, exposing them to basic "Computer Programming" will increase individual self awareness.
My Project
My students are excited to learn basic "Computer Programming" and how it can be used as a tool when presenting their work. My students enjoy creations and presentations.
They will use "computer programming" skills to enhance their critical thinking skills to innovate and to create video games, animations, and more. However, they are limited by a lack of tools available to our class. Struggling to get resources in the classroom that the students will find fun, innovative and academic can be very draining.
I am pleading, for my students' needs of two Chromebook laptop computers to be able to download "Computer Programming" applications (Alice, Codemoster, code.org) to create their own moving stories.
Donations to this project will improve my classroom and change my students' lives because 90% of my school and student households are very poor therefore the parents cannot afford technology.
"Computer Programming" Skills will stimulate motivation and self-esteem in my students while improving and preparing them for College and Career readiness.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
