My Students
If you've ever moved before, you know how expensive it can be. I want to help my new arrivals by having a care package of basics ready for them when they walk in the door!
My students are refugees and immigrants coming to me from other countries.
Many come with only the shirts on their backs. Some have even fled their homeland on their own. Getting settled is expensive, to say the least. Registering for school requires that uniforms be purchased. And sometimes, there isn't money for supplies after that.
My Project
In two weeks time, I have gotten eight new students. And, to be honest, my supply closet and my petty cash fund (my own money) is exhausted. I am asking for enough supplies to create eight care packages to have ready for when new students arrive. In each of the mesh backpacks I will have a three-ring binder with dividers and paper, pens, pencils, highlighters and a combination lock (for PE). I'll even throw in an envelope with enough money for lunch for the first couple of days and a campus map!
It's not much. Just the basics that any child would need on their first day of school. Just enough to give them a good start.
Imagine what a difference this will make as a new child arrives.
Instead of seeing me frantically searching for needed supplies in the closet, I can calmly hand them a bag ready for the day. This simple gift will take away the stress and worry of a new student as he/she will have what's needed. And, better yet, these children will be coming into a place where they can feel safe, cared for and welcomed from the very start!
