My students need headphones for our listening and technology centers!
We need books, books, books so we can grow our reading interests, fluency, and comprehension!
8:15 the day begins. Teacher: "Class, Class!" Students: "Yes, Yes!" 17 enthusiastic second graders sit upright with "peanut butter" folded hands, waiting eagerly for their next direction.
These students hail from the heart of Camden, NJ and are the hardest working, most compassionate students I have ever met.
Just by looking at their bright faces and crisp uniforms you would never know that they come from such a rough neighborhood. They are sweet, caring, and love to learn. Every day I am greeted with exciting stories about books they read last night, or a connection they made to something we are learning in class. "Miss there is a road runner in my book! Just like the story we were reading!" was the story I heard this morning before we even entered the classroom. "Miss I'm in the 100 club!!!" another student yelled, referring to their number of 15-minute reading steps. Their love for learning does not stop with reading. Math, science, social studies, art, music, PE - they love it all. Children are often described as sponges. This is especially true for this group of amazing individuals.
My Project
You would be donating to expand our classroom library with high interest books for my students. These high interest books will help my students grow and learn about a variety of topics, expose them to important vocabulary, and further their love of reading.
Your donation will also go towards a set of class headphones that will be used in our technology center. This center is used in both math and language arts to supplement skills learned in the classroom as well as close gap in the students' learning.
Donations for this project will provide students with books and the opportunity to expand their reading.
It has been proven that the amount a student reads directly connects with higher test scores and higher self confidence. These students may not have access to books at home, this will fill important gaps in their learning and literacy.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
